How the Priming Sugar Calculator works
Priming sugar is the small amount of fermentable sugar added at bottling so residual yeast produces the CO₂ that carbonates your beer. This calculator accounts for the CO₂ already dissolved in the beer, which depends on the highest temperature it reached.
Enter your batch volume, that peak temperature, and a target carbonation level in volumes of CO₂ to get the corn sugar (dextrose) required, plus a table-sugar equivalent.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does temperature matter for priming?
- Beer retains more dissolved CO₂ at lower temperatures. The calculator subtracts that residual CO₂ from your target so you do not over-prime.
- Can I use table sugar instead of corn sugar?
- Yes. Sucrose is slightly more efficient, so use about 91% of the corn-sugar mass shown.
