How the SRM Color Calculator works
SRM (Standard Reference Method) expresses beer color on a numeric scale from pale straw to deep black. This calculator uses the Morey equation, which sums each grain's malt color units (MCU) over the batch and applies a power-law fit.
MCU is grain weight in pounds times its Lovibond color, divided by batch volume in gallons. The color swatch is an approximation to help you picture the result.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Morey equation?
- SRM = 1.4922 × MCU^0.6859, where MCU = Σ(grain_lb × color_°L) / volume_gal.
- How do I convert SRM to EBC?
- Multiply SRM by 1.97 to get the European EBC color value.
